Chapter 12

“I heard you wanted to have a chat with me. Is now a good time?”

Lisa was startled by Nathan’s voice behind her. Deep in thought, she was worrying about the counselling session awaiting her. Nathan had followed her out of the main office and had said nothing until he got to the area in front of the lifts. Her first instinct was to spin around to defend herself. It had been that way since her abduction. The horrors were still just beneath the surface.

“Don’t do that! You nearly gave me a heart attack!”

“I’m sorry, I thought you had heard me.”

“Heard you? I almost brained you. Let me introduce you to the world. Don’t ever sneak up on a woman. Better still, don’t ever sneak up on anyone. You are likely to get punched or have them keel over or both.”

“You sound like Jack,” laughed Nathan. The sudden change of expression on Lisa’s face made it clear that he had said the wrong thing. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to offend you.”

“Forget it. What do you want? I’m kind of busy.”

“You wanted to speak to me.”

“Did I? What about?”

“I don’t know. I got the impression I might have done something wrong from the looks I was getting.”

“And have you done anything wrong?”

“I don’t think so.”

Lisa thought for a moment and then the light bulb switched on in her head. Had Nathan been the one to tell Gregor Banks where Jeremy Miles lived? Common sense said he would not be that stupid and yet both the new recruits had shown a sense of naivety. With Gregor able to turn the most loyal officer, a green DC would provide little challenge.

“Okay, yes, I remember. Can it wait for a moment? I’ve got another meeting that I am late for?”

“No problem. Is there anything you want me to do while you are busy?”

“Yes.”

“What?” asked the young lad eagerly.

“Practice not sneaking up on people. You would have killed half the relics in here if you had done that to them.”

Nathan felt some reassurance from knowing that Lisa had not lost her sense of humour.

Sally Drake was sitting on her chair when Lisa walked in. For the first time in a couple of days, Lisa felt nervous. She had not slept well the previous night. The thought of having to talk things through had been rattling around in her head. It was the one time she pondered whether Jack had the right answer. Was she better off ignoring everything and drowning her sorrows in drink?

Sally smiled, her warmth radiating from her pristine appearance. Everything about her was neat from her polished heels to her pinstripe skirt, topped with a fitted cream jumper. Even in such figure-hugging clothes, her slim figure never looked overly presented. She was a lady who carried her beauty well. Lisa felt obligated to fiddle with her hair as she pondered whether her off-the-shelf clothes were a little too tight. It was hard not to be envious of a lady who looked like she had life worked out.
